What is Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization is the art of increasing the quality and quantity of your website traffic through results from organic search in search engines. This means that you will be able to attract more customers, clients, or patients that are actively looking online for the product or service you offer. How? Because when a person searches for the product or service you offer, your website and business will be found online before any of your competition.
When a person types a query into a search box on Yahoo, Bing, Google, or any other search engine, it returns a list of websites that are related to your query. The search engine you are using, whether Google or Yahoo, etc, has a “bot” whose work is to search and gather information on the internet about the content related to your search. The “bot” then builds an index of information that is available on the internet. This index is fed to an algorithm, which determines which websites will display where in the SERP’s (search engine results page).
Search engine optimization is basically the process of influencing the search engine algorithm to display your website in a particular location in the results (generally the top of page 1). Optimization takes place using various methods both on your actual website and off your website.
On-page SEO, also referred to as on-site SEO, describes the manipulations made directly by the content on your web page. This involves HTML code optimization, content structure, and content quality. Other on-page factors include page quality, keywords, title tags, alt text, meta description, and header tags.
Off-page SEO, also known as off-site SEO, is a collection of all SEO practices that take place outside the business/company website, like the social signals, backlinks obtained by reaching out to bloggers and influencers, link relevancy, and domain authority.
Backlinks are considered by many to be the queen of SEO while content is king. It is all about the site that has the most desirable quality links that point back to the website you are trying to optimize. However that does not mean the most links.
Most businesses can benefit from SEO by gaining high search engine results page (SERP) rankings to aid in the building of brand awareness. When your business website appears on the front page of the main search engines (such as Yahoo, Google, and Bing) your brand automatically earns the trust of both existing and prospective customers over brands with a weaker web presence.
Search engine optimization has everything to do with website optimization for the search engines. It is the art of influencing indexed content that is crawled and ranked on top of popular search engines like Bing, Yahoo! and Google.
If you are planning on using SEO to your advantage to get more customers, clients, or patients, the techniques mentioned above are where you need to start. You need to apply various techniques to optimize your web pages so that search engines can easily find them and favor them when users search for relevant information.
