St Louis Galleria Mall
St. Louis Galleria Mall is a massive shopping mall conveniently located in Richmond Heights, Missouri just near St. Louis. The site is where the Westroads Shopping Center was originally situated. Hycel Properties bought the property in 1984 and demolished most of the mall but left only the Stix (North Wing), which had Walgreens. The site is now home to the stylish and elegant Saint Louis Galleria. The Stix chain was later acquired by Dillard’s, which grew and expanded during the same time.
In 2006, Nordstrom announced that it would be opening a store at the mall but later delayed the opening city reasons related to the local economy hit hard by the 2008 recession, which forced Mark Shale and Jimmy’s to close shop. The fiscal year 2008 saw Richmond Heights, which obtained 50 percent of its revenue from sales taxes, for while the mall is the largest taxpayer, lose its sales tax receipts which dropped to $9.1 million by the end of June 30, 2008, from the previous fiscal year’s $10.1 million. The mall also took a hit in 2017 when protests spiked following the acquittal of a Caucasian police officer in the shooting of African American Anthony Lamar Smith. 22 people were arrested during the protests. Other instances of violence at the mall include the stabbing of a customer by another customer in June 2018 and the July 2020 shooting that left a man dead and another injured.
Safety measures
The mall implements safety measures to ensure members of the public are safe at all times when accessing and using the premises for business transactions and other activities permitted on the premises. For instance, during the coronavirus outbreak that forced many businesses across the U.S. and even the rest of the world to close, the mall enforced the COVID-19 measures and guidelines issued by the Governor regarding the reopening of specific retail businesses and ensured they were followed to the letter to prevent the spread of the disease. It also announced its reopening date and provided standard operating hours on its website.
